Lagoon and Reef Watch Movement
Since February 2002, the Mauritius Oceanography Institute has
taken the lead of the Lagoon and Reef Watch Movement, which
works towards the sensitisation of the Mauritian public on the
marine and coastal environment. The Lagoon and Reef Watch Movement
is an initiative of the National Environment Fund, and is unique
as it groups governmental and private bodies as well as a number
of NGOs.

Activities organised by the Lagoon and Reef Watch Movement
The awareness campaign of the Lagoon and Reef Watch Movement
started on a pilot basis in a number of primary schools in
the northern and southern coasts of Mauritius. Talks and video
shows were organised and pamphlets and stickers were distributed
to the children. The activity most appreciated by the children,
and their teachers, was the glass-bottom boat trip during
which they could admire the beauty and diversity of the corals.
The children were then asked to describe their experience
through drawing and essay-writing competitions. Similar activities
will be organised in other schools, youth and community centres
across the country.
