NGCC

The Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) is initiated and implemented under the leadership of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, with input into its development by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), the United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Council for Science (ICSU).

GOOS has been conceived as a 'user-driven' system. The structure and tasks are defined with the objective of delivering a global ocean data and products in the most efficient way to those who can use or apply this information for public benefit. Its objectives will be achieved through the development of co-operative relationships among the wide variety of entities concerned with global ocean monitoring and observation.

Upon recommendation of Intergovernmental GOOS panel, Mauritius has now set up a National GOOS Coordinating Committee (NGCC) with its secretariat at MOI. NGCC would work to provide input in the affairs of guiding all oceanographic activities in the country. This Committee will be a forum to discuss the formulation and implementation of programmes in ocean science and technology in an effective and collaborative manner to reap scientific, technological, economic and geopolitical benefits for Mauritius.

The NGCC membership includes all major national institutions, relevant ministries, NGOs, National Coast Guard and other public sector organizations active in the field of oceanography. A Steering Committee has been formed with its Chair on 2-year rotation to steer the activities of NGCC. Mr. N Sok Appadu (Director, Meteorological Services) and Prof. Indur Fagoonee (Pro-VC, University of Mauritius) have been elected to occupy the posts of Chair and Co-Chair respectively of the NGCC for the first term (2002-2004).
